Government submits supplementary budget proposal to Parliament

On Thursday 21 March, the Government submitted a supplementary budget proposal for 2024 to Parliament. The proposal includes appropriations for speeding up the construction of the fence on the eastern border, introducing targeted measures to alleviate the situation in the construction sector and providing additional support to Ukraine. In addition, it proposes reducing revenue estimates by EUR 1.3 billion based on the forecast published by the Ministry of Finance in December 2023.
Finland and the United States intensify their cooperation on cybersecurity

On Tuesday 12 March, the EU’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council decided to recommend that the European Parliament grant discharge to the Commission in respect of the implementation of the general budget of the European Union for the financial year 2022. Finland voted against the recommendation together with four other Member States.
Ministry of Finance updates the government debt management strategy

The aim of updating the strategy is to reduce debt management risks and simplify operations.
Currency hedging measures limit currency risk associated with Finland’s F-35 procurement

The State Treasury has used currency hedging in the purchase of F-35 fighter jets by the Finnish Defence Forces. The foreign currency forward contracts concluded on behalf of the state aim to limit currency risk associated with the investment. These contracts fix the price of the currency in advance, providing predictability and financial security for the investment.
State Budget 2024
The central government's appropriations in the budget proposal total EUR 87.9 billion. Revenue is estimated at EUR 76.3 billion. The budget proposal shows a deficit of EUR 11.5 billion.
Economic Survey, Winter 2023
The Finnish economy will contract this year by 0.5 per cent. It is expected to grow 0.7 per cent in 2024 and 2.0 per cent in 2025.
