More two-euro commemorative coins on the way
Because of the enormous demand for the 2004 two-euro commemorative coin, the Ministry of Finance has decided to mint an extra 500,000 of them. As 500,000 of the coins have already been minted, this means that a total of 1,000,000 of the coins commemorating EU enlargement will be issued altogether.
An extra 440,000 of the commemorative coins will be issued between September and November 2004, mixed in with ordinary two-euro coins. Rahapaja, the Finnish mint, will be able to use the final 60,000 coins for making up sets of coins for sale.
An invited competition was organized for the obverse (national) side of the Finnish two-euro coin, which was won by the sculptor Pertti Mäkinen. It shows an embossed column capital with a ten-leafed plant growing from it to fill the centre of the coin. The reverse side of the coin is the same as the reverse side of the ordinary two-euro coin.
