20.11.2025 | On Thursday 20 November, the Government submitted its proposal to Parliament to amend the budget proposal for 2026. It includes proposals to launch new transport projects and to support Ukraine. The proposal will decrease the revenue estimate by EUR 189 million and increase the requirement for appropriations by EUR 455 million.

6.7.2023 | On Thursday 6 July, the President of the Republic appointed Wille Rydman, Master of Social Sciences, as the new Minister of Economic Affairs. The President also released Vilhelm Junnila from his duties as Minister of Economic Affairs and as a member of the Government.

23.4.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029. The decisions focus on reinforcing the conditions for economic growth and enhancing the security of Finland and the Finnish people. At the same time, the Government will ensure that public finances are sustainable. The growth package will be financed responsibly through measures to increase general government revenue and reduce expenditure.

6.11.2024 | Minister of Finance Riikka Purra gave the Government’s address to a memorial ceremony for Jews handed over to Nazi Germany by Finland. The memorial was held in Helsinki on 6 November.

15.2.2024 | The Government has appointed Liisa Räsänen, Master of Social Sciences, as Director General of the State Treasury. Räsänen is currently working as a director in the State Treasury.

29.6.2023 | In its plenary session on 29 June, the Government appointed Päivi Nerg (Master of Science in Agriculture and Forestry), Laura Rissanen (Master of Social Sciences), Timo Jaatinen (Master of Social Sciences), Elina Laavi (Master of Public Administration), Juha Martelius (Doctor of Social Sciences) and Teija Makkonen (Master of Military Science, Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Administrative Sciences) to serve as state secretaries.

30.5.2022 | The misallocation of labour and capital in the Finnish business sector has increased in the 2000s, which has significantly retarded productivity growth. The concentration of labour to companies with lower productivity is a key factor in retarding growth. A more efficient allocation of labour could be influenced, for example, by dismantling incentive traps and increasing labour mobility and wage competition, states a recent study by Aalto University and ETLA Economic Research.

23.11.2023 | On Thursday 23 November, the Government submitted its proposal to Parliament to amend the budget proposal for 2024. Among others, the proposal includes amendments related to support for Ukraine, the health and social services transfer calculation and central government transfers to local government. In line with the proposal, the revenue estimate will be increased by EUR 76 million, while the need for appropriations will decrease by EUR 48 million.

27.5.2021 | On Tuesday 27 May, the President of the Republic released Member of Parliament Matti Vanhanen, Master of Social Sciences, from the post of Minister of Finance and his membership in the Government. On the same occasion, the President transferred and appointed Minister of Science and Culture Annika Saarikko as Minister of Finance and appointed Member of Parliament Antti Kurvinen, Lawyer, Master of Laws, as a Member of Government and Minister of Science and Culture.

4.8.2022 | Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko’s draft budget for 2023 has been drawn up amidst an uncertain economic outlook. The draft budget totals approximately EUR 79.5 billion with a deficit of around EUR 6.3 billion. Borrowing will decrease by approximately EUR 2.5 billion from the total budgeted for 2022. The proposal will be published in full at budjetti.vm.fi on Friday 5 August.

1.9.2022 | The budget proposal for 2023 of Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Government builds sustainable growth for the future, secures purchasing power and assists people with the hike in electricity prices. The budget proposal responds to the effects of Russia’s war of aggression and inflation, improves safety and security, security of supply, and energy self-sufficiency, and provides further investment in research and development and in the green transition.

14.2.2020 | An international panel has carried out an evaluation of the activities of the VATT Institute for Economic Research. The panel submitted its report to the Ministry of Finance on Friday 14 February.

29.10.2020 | The Government has appointed Leena Mörttinen, Doctor of Social Sciences, as Permanent Under-Secretary for International and Financial Markets Affairs. She is currently serving as Director General of the Financial Markets Department at the Ministry of Finance.
