Finland ranked second in the UN E-Government Survey

Finland ranked second in the UN E-Government Survey, which is published every second year and was now conducted for the twelfth time. This is Finland’s highest ever ranking. Denmark ranked first in the survey and South Korea third. The survey covers 193 countries.

The UN E-Government Survey looks are how well digital government and digital services are available, how well UN Member States provide effective, accountable and inclusive digital services and how well digital government supports sustainable development. One of the key factors that the survey looks at is bridging the digital divide. 

“This high ranking is the result of our persistent work to build digital services and digital government in Finland. We cannot take this result for granted, and we have much work still ahead of us. However, this great result does tell us that we are on the right track,” says Minister of Local Government Sirpa Paatero.

According to the report, the United Nations E-Government Development Index (EGDI) has improved slightly worldwide over the past two years (0.5988 -> 0.6102), but the world remains highly divided digitally. Europe is the leading continent in e-government, and the situation here is generally good. However, as much as 45% of the global population live in countries with poorly developed digital governance. Development is currently weakest in African countries. 

The report also concludes that cloud technology plays a key role for UN Member States seeking ways to streamline e-government and adopt new technologies.
