25.11.2025 | Finland does not meet the EU’s criteria for public deficit, according to the European Commission. The Commission is considering proposing that the EU open an excessive deficit procedure for Finland.

2.10.2025 | Finland’s Draft Budgetary Plan for next year is based on the Government’s budget proposal.

12.12.2025 | The Council of the European Union will adopt the recommendations for corrective measures in January when deciding to open an excessive deficit procedure.

30.9.2025 | Finland believes it has achieved further milestones in its Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). The Ministry of Finance filed the third payment request under the RRP with the European Commission on Tuesday 30 September.

30.4.2025 | Finland is requesting that the EU activate the national escape clause in the EU’s fiscal policy rules in order to increase defence spending. The majority of EU Member States are likely to request activation of the escape clause.

4.6.2025 | The European Commission recommends that the Council of the EU activate the national escape clause for Finland. The recommendation is based on increasing defence spending. The Commission does not recommend opening an excessive deficit procedure.

9.11.2023 | The EU already regulates cross-border electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the eIDAS Regulation. The Regulation will now be amended to include common legislation on European Digital Identity Wallets for citizens and businesses.

14.10.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted a total of EUR 44,546,484 in investment aid to 12 projects under the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). Moreover, by a decision supported by the Ministerial Finance Committee on 3 October, EUR 28,048,200 was granted to Nordic Ren-Gas Oy for a large demonstration project on new energy technology.

3.8.2023 | A reform of the EU Customs Union would simplify customs processes and modernise customs procedures. The Finnish Government welcomes the proposed reform in general terms.

15.4.2024 | The call for applications on investment aid for energy infrastructure projects under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) has been opened. Applications will be accepted until the 15th of May 2024. The aid may be granted to companies and corporations for projects, where eligible costs exceed EUR 5 million. The investment aid available for projects is approximately EUR 35 million.

11.3.2022 | Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko will represent Finland in the meeting of EU and euro area finance ministers on 14–15 March.

30.6.2022 | Finland's share of funding from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility will decrease to EUR 1.8 billion at current prices, because Finland’s economy has developed better than forecast. Finland will receive a total of EUR 2.6 billion at current prices from the programmes in the EU's recovery plan (NextGenerationEU). The Ministerial Working Group on Sustainable Growth in Finland has outlined how Finland's Recovery and Resilience Plan will be updated to reflect this change.

22.11.2023 | The Ministry of Finance has launched a project to determine how to make internal control and risk management a strategic part of central government processes. The Ministry has partnered with the OECD in the project.

9.11.2021 | On Tuesday 9 November, Finland and six other EU Member States published a joint statement, expressing their support to the European Payment Initiative aimed at creating a European payment card and a digital wallet.

2.7.2024 | The European Commission has published its annual State of the Digital Decade report, in which it assesses the progress of Member States in applying digitalisation and issues recommendations for further action. The particular strengths of Finland specified in the report are comprehensive basic digital skills and digitalisation in small and medium-sized businesses.

6.10.2023 | Finland and the other Nordic countries risk becoming underrepresented among the official staff in EU institutions. Concerns were raised about the issue in a report published on 6 October comparing the measures taken by certain Member States to promote their citizens’ careers in the EU. According to the report, national efforts alone will not be enough to rectify the situation over the short or medium term.

25.4.2024 | The General Government Fiscal Plan covers central government, wellbeing services counties, municipalities, and statutory earnings-related pension funds and other social security funds.
