Preparation of next year’s budget proposal under way
The Ministry of Finance’s budget session began on Thursday 24 August.
The session is being led by Minister of Finance Riikka Purra. Participants include senior officials from the Ministry and the Minister’s advisory staff. Minister of Local and Regional Government Anna-Kaisa Ikonen attended the first part of the session, which concerned the economic outlook.
"We are preparing the Budget and General Government Fiscal Plan in very challenging circumstances. Our goal is to permanently strengthen general government finances by six billion euros during this parliamentary term, as agreed in the Government Programme," said Minister of Finance Purra.
"We must break the chronic spiral of government debt we are in once and for all. This will require all of us to make a determined effort to tighten our belts. Further adjustments will be needed after this parliamentary term, as well. Our aim is to create a balanced and fair overall package," Purra said.
A press conference on the Minister of Finance’s draft budget will be held on Friday 25 August. The exact time will be announced later. Separate invitations to the press conference will be sent to the media. A live webcast will be available on the Government’s YouTube channel.
