Pentti Pikkarainen appointed Financial Markets Department head
Today 10 June 2010 the Government appointed Doctor of Philosophy Pentti Pikkarainen as the new Director General of the Financial Markets Department at the Ministry of Finance for the period from 1 August 2010 to 31 July 2017. The present Director General, Mr Peter Nyberg, will retire at the end of June.
Professor Pikkarainen has headed four different departments in the Bank of Finland between 1994 and 2010. He has also been an associate professor at the University of Helsinki and coordinator for international economic research programmes in different Finnish institutes for economics.
Also today, the Government appointed Doctor of Political Science Tuomas Sukselainen as the new Director General of the Department of Economics at the Ministry of Finance for a fixed period from 1 August 2010 to 29 February 2012. The permanent holder of the post, Mr Jukka Pekkarinen, was appointed State Under-Secretary for Economic Affairs and Secretary General of the Economic Council in the Prime Minister's Office in May.
Professor Sukselainen has served at the Ministry since 1996, for instance in the Budget Department as a Senior Budget Adviser and Budget Director, and as Head of the Economic Policy Unit and Structural Policy Unit in the Economics Department. In the late 1990s he was special adviser for economic and financial affairs at Finland?s permanent representation to the European Union in Brussels. Prior to the Ministry of Finance, Tuomas Sukselainen was employed in the Bank of Finland, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), EFTA Secretariat and the Finnish Bankers? Association.
